Any pear variety...
All pear varieties boast several healthy properties. Pears are a good source of dietary fibre, especially pectin, which – being soluble –produces a viscous substance able to bind together with the “bad” cholesterol during digestion, leading to its reduced absorption. Pears also contain another type of dietary fibre, lysine (the same found in beans), which is not soluble but can absorb high quantities of water, thus easing intestinal transit. This mechanism seems to be able to lower the risk of colon cancer. In addition pears have anti-inflammatory properties. Thanks to their high sugar content (fructose and glucose) they are a good source of energy and help prevent fatigue. They also contain sorbitol, a substance able to favour digestion and good for teeth. Pears also contain anti-oxidants. Thanks to their potassium content they are suitable for countering the detrimental effects of free radicals, as well as to contrast stroke or hypertension.
Pears are made of...
Pears are 84% water, the remaining part is composed of sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, dietary fibre and ashes. The following minerals are found in pears: potassium, calcium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, fluorine and, in limited quantities, zinc and copper. As far as vitamins are concerned, pears contain vitamin A, some B-complex vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5 e B6 ), and vitamins C, D, K and J. Pear fruit is highly digestible and one of the very low calorie fruits: it provides 35 calories per 100g.
